Weiwei Chen is the Director and Senior Engineer of Network Optimization and Management Division in China Unicom’s Research Institute and heads up the Big Data Research Initiative in the institute. He has been working in the research institute since graduating from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1992.

China Unicom: China Unicom (中国联通) is one of the three dominant state-owned telecommunication companies in China and the world’s fourth largest mobile service provider by subscriber base. China Unicom has the largest WCDMA network worldwide, with 0.3 billion mobile users and 0.15 billion 3G & 4G users. China Unicom’s Research Institute is the research arm of the company and was founded in 1952 as the research institute of the Ministry of Telecommunication.

Mr. Chen will discuss the opportunities that the big data from China’s telecommunication industry present and present the big data strategy in China Unicom by describing the type of data they own (9TB or 100 billion records per day) and what values they bring. CICER researchers hope to leverage their data for research.

Presentation will be in Chinese. English translation will be provided and slides are in English. Lunch will be served at 1:00 PM.
