CIHLER is nearly back to its pre-pandemic days. Last September, we hosted our 21st Annual Labor and Employment Roundtable. In addition to members of our management board, we also had a concurrent roundtable with our employee advocate board. In the afternoon, both groups met to discuss the issues that are affecting the industry.

Our 18th annual HR in Hospitality Conference, with over 300 attendees, seven plenaries, and more than 20 breakouts, continues to be our signature event. This year, our keynote was Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., President and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). I can honestly say that Johnny rocked the house – thanks for coming, my friend! Once again, CIHLER had a significant presence at the Georgetown Hospitality Law Summit, ALIS Law, the Big Sky Labor Conference, and NYU’s 76th annual labor conference.

Given our Center’s mission to modernize labor relations in the hospitality industry, CIHLER continues to focus on holding union/management roundtables and Unite Here’s presence at CIHLER’s annual conference continues to grow. Our HR in Hospitality Conference featured numerous panels with leaders from Unite Here. The 2025 HR in Hospitality Conference at the Hotel Del Coronado will have even more joint sessions with the union and other plaintiffs as we discuss the employment law issues of the day. In September of 2024, Gwen Mills, President of Unite Here, and I will be keynote speakers at next year’s Georgetown Hospitality Law Summit, strengthening our relationship even further.

As we continue to look forward, we will have our 22nd Annual Labor and Employment Roundtable on September 9th in Ithaca, NY. We will host several Roundtables and continue our eCornell Webinar series—we did four this year and expect to double that number next year. We are thrilled that Mike Maffie, Assistant Professor of Human Resources, will be presenting on AI in Big Sky in August. I will be there, too. I hope to see some of you there!

Lastly, on the research front, Harry Katz and I are part of a team that proved that arbitration is 19 times more plaintiff-friendly than litigation. This research corrects decades of what we now know was inaccurate scholarship that, unfortunately, Congress relied on. CIHLER is part of the team working with members of Congress to correct this misperception.

Our goal here at CIHLER is to continue to be at the forefront of the industry and grow our board membership. We are incredibly thankful for the work that the members on both CIHLER boards do to further our mission and our friend, thought leader, and driving force, John Ceriale, without whom none of this would be possible.

</details>
                  <details class="expandable">

    December 2023

As the year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible year we’ve had at CIHLER. It has been a year filled with meaningful progress in our mission to modernize hospitality labor and management relations. We are deeply grateful for the unwavering commitment and dedication you have shown as a vital member of our board.

We are so thankful for participation in our Roundtables and the HR in Hospitality Conference. In addition to your professional expertise, your personal commitment to CIHLER has been instrumental in shaping the industry.

The impact of your service goes beyond the boardroom; it extends to our Cornell students as well. Your generous support of our center allows us to sponsor student travel to the HR in Hospitality Conference and our annual NYC class trip to observe an arbitration hearing. You can view all of CIHLER’s recent events and research in our academic year annual report.

As we reflect on the accomplishments of the past year, we are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead in 2024. Your continued involvement and support will be critical as we embark on new initiatives and strive to make an even greater impact.

May the coming year bring you joy, fulfillment, and continued success. The entire team at CIHLER wishes you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season and a happy new year.

With deepest appreciation,
Dave, Rick, Harry & Natalie

</details>
                  <details class="expandable">

    July 2023

The 17th Annual HR in Hospitality Conference was an incredible success thanks to the hard work of our event planning team: Natalie Oldfield, Mark Yeager, Sam Issa and Cornell faculty members: Bruce Tracey, Harry Katz, Rick Hurd, Tashlin Lakhani and Mike Maffie. We’re especially grateful to our CIHLER board members who presented and created an amazing agenda.

The support of our CIHLER members has also been instrumental in funding increased student engagement and participation in several events we held this year.
Most notably, we were able to bring six ILR and Hotel School upperclassmen to participate in the 2023 HR in Hospitality Conference. Not only were they able to get hands-on experience assisting with a large-scale event, but they also were able to network with industry leaders and sit in on all of the educational sessions we offered.

Max Zirkman ’24 had this to say about his experience:
“This conference is a great experience for Hotel and ILR students as it allows us to take the theoretical topics we have learned in class and see how they apply in the real world. It is priceless when you are in a breakout session and a partner at a law firm takes the time to further explain the complexities of the topic being presented! In addition, it is also another great opportunity for Hotel and ILR students to collaborate as we have done in Professor Sherwyn’s 4810 Labor Law class. Lastly, the ability to network with all of the industry leaders is by far the most valuable as they are so willing and excited to speak with us!”

Thank you to everyone who took the time to meet and interact with our Cornell student team! It means so much to them to have encouragement from those who are in the field. Through your generous support of our Center, we will be able to continue to provide these memorable experiences to our Cornell students.

The 2023 HR in Hospitality Conference was a big success where we saw increased attendance and received positive feedback both on-site and through our post-event survey. We are working as a team to continue to develop sessions and content that is compelling, relevant, and timely and to continue to provide a fun and educational conference for our attendees.

Our goal is to continue to increase attendance for the 2024 HR in Hospitality Conference at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. As always, a HUGE thank you to our CIHLER board members for your support as speakers as well as sponsors.

</details>
                  <details class="expandable">

    December 2022

We have much to be thankful for this time of year at the Cornell Center for Innovative Hospitality Labor Employment Relations (CIHLER). As we experienced a more “normal” academic year, we were able to return to in-person events including the National HR in Hospitality Conference in Miami and our annual field trip to NYC where ILR and SHA students were able to observe a hotel arbitration at the Office of the Independent Chairperson.

We also hosted several live Roundtables including our 20th Annual Labor and Employment Law Roundtable as well as our first Union/Management Roundtable where the VP’s of Labor Relations for the major hotel brands and leaders of the Union worked together toward realizing CIHLER’s mission: modernizing hospitality labor relations.

CIHLER had, and will continue to have, a large presence at the Big Sky Labor & Employment Conference and will also be well represented at ALIS Law, the IFA Legal Symposium, and other industry events while simultaneously preparing for our 17th Annual National HR in Hospitality Conference this year in Phoenix, AZ May 1 – 3. And lastly, I would like to thank the Cornell Conference Team, Mark Yeager, Sam Issa and Natalie Oldfield for keeping us all on track and organized this year!

In addition to the conference, CIHLER continues to stay on top of the labor and employment issues in hospitality. In February, we hosted the 10th Annual Labor Relations Roundtable event at The Ray Hotel in Delray Beach, FL.
