How to Create Your Digital Signage
- For all signage, select your school name in the left navigation. Choose a template style, color, and layout, then download your template of choice. These templates are designed in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
- Open the template you’ve downloaded in PowerPoint.
- Add your content, following the styles and layouts provided. Text and images are editable. Be sure not to change the slide size (“Standard (4:3)” is required). If you submit a 16:9 slide for use in the 4:3 area, your image will be distorted and your slide will be sent back for revisions.
- Save your PowerPoint file as a JPEG image. If your version of PowerPoint allows you to specify the image dimensions, use 1268 x 951 pixels (4:3).
- Fill out the request form, including your goal for posting and the building(s) where you would like your sign to be displayed. Upload your sign (in JPEG format) at the bottom of the digital-signage request form and submit.
All requests are posted upon approval by the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business marketing and communications team.
Resources for Learning PowerPoint
Cornell offers a variety of free online learning opportunities that include training videos, courses, books, and certifications through Lynda.com and Skillsoft. Numerous PowerPoint courses are available through both sites to build your PowerPoint skills.
Best Practices
- Less is more! Most viewers will only see your sign for a few seconds, while walking by the screen. Keep it simple and short. Move the details to a website and display a short webpage address for more information.
- Signage aimed at encouraging attendance at an event should be posted no more than ten days prior to the event.
- Signage posted longer than one to one-and-a-half weeks will lose effectiveness due to overexposure. For more advance notice, consider posting intermittently for shorter durations (e.g., 3-5 days) each time.
- Do not use trademarked logos or copyright-protected images without permission.
