For Sponsoring Companies:
Participating companies gain access to talented, energetic students who provide a fresh perspective and make valued contributions. Companies also create a connection with the world’s foremost program in hospitality leadership education.
Internship Criteria
- Internship Duration – Internships can last from 2 weeks to 12 weeks. For example, students have approximately an 8 week Winter Break (Fall semester typically concludes in December and Spring semester generally begins in January; see academic calendar to stay up to date). This would allow for an approximate 6 to 8 week internship depending on the employer and student availability. Depending on the type of internship, availability can vary with each student. If the internship is remote, it can be done anytime of the year based upon the availability of the student.
- Intern Compensation and Living Expenses – Participating companies should be prepared to pay a competitive salary. Housing and transportation arrangements are the intern’s responsibility; however, any support and/or information a sponsoring company can provide regarding summer rentals, transit centers, etc. is helpful.
- Intern Reporting Relationship – Interns should report to an entrepreneur or senior executive accountable for a meaningful innovation activity within the sponsoring company.
Company Participation Process
We operate according to the NACE Principles of Professional Practice and, while Cornell is unable to refer individual candidates, we invite employers to take advantage of our free job posting service to promote job and internship opportunities.
- Join Cornell Handshake. Cornell uses the Handshake system to post internships and salary-based positions for current students and alumni with 0-5 years of work experience that also require a bachelor’s degree or higher level of education.
- To (1) join an existing employer account or (2) To establish a new account: Select “Sign up for an account” at https://cornell.joinhandshake.com and follow employer (not ‘student’ or ‘alumni’) prompts. If possible, we recommend using an email address linked to a corporate domain (or Gmail) to create an employer account instead of a Cornell alumni email.
- Communications are sent from Handshake and often go into spam or junk folders; to prevent that, add the following email to your contacts: handshake@notifications.joinhandshake.com.
- Please send our Operations team a quick note to careers@business.cornell.edu and they will review the account request. They can also answer any Handshake questions you may have.

Please note that to select ‘Hotel Administration,’ or other Cornell-specific majors as a target group, you can do so in the preferences tab and then ‘choose a specific major by school.’
2. Contact the Institute by email to inform them of your participation. Work directly with the program manager on marketing that can be used to inform students of your internship opportunity. Marketing includes email blasts to the student list serve and TV slides to display throughout The Nolan School.
3. Review and Interview Applicants
- It is ultimately the participating company’s responsibility to review applications, contact applicants, and carry out interviews. Applications will be sent to your email automatically via Handshake.

4. Internship Offer
- Participating companies should plan to make employment offers directly to the students. If a hiring decision has been made prior to your posting deadline, please notify careers@business.cornell.edu as soon as possible.
