Sofia Kalantzi

Biography

Sofia Kalantzi is an associate teaching professor of economics at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management, part of the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. She holds a bachelor of science in economics from Aristotle University, where she graduated summa cum laude with the highest GPA since the School of Economics was founded, and a Ph.D. in economics from the LeBow College of Business at Drexel University, where she received the Symbolic Degree on behalf of all Ph.D. graduates.

At Drexel, Kalantzi taught courses including Introduction to Macroeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics and International Money and Finance, earning the highest course evaluations for both introductory and intermediate macroeconomics. She received the 2015 Dr. John J. and Dr. Margaret T. Clark Outstanding Ph.D. Student Instructor Award in recognition of her teaching excellence.

Kalantzi’s research focuses on macroeconomics, macro prudential policies, banking, monetary and fiscal policy, financial economics, time series econometrics and applied macroeconomics. Her work examines key features of the global financial crisis, explaining why countries adopted different policy responses and how those policies are transmitted in the presence of financial market frictions. Her findings contribute to discussions about the welfare implications and real economic effects of alternative stabilization policies.

She is a member of the American Economic Association, the Royal Economic Association and Beta Gamma Sigma Honors Society, and an assistant fellow at the UNESCO Chair on Education for Human Rights, Democracy and Peace.
