Double Major in Applied Economics and Management (AEM)

Learn about eligibility requirements, application procedures, and key deadlines for the Applied Economics and Management (AEM) double major.

To pursue a double major in AEM, you must be a full-time Cornell CALS student in good standing and have demonstrated proficiency in math, economics, and statistics. Additionally, you should be able to articulate how the AEM major aligns with your current academic and career goals.

Before applying to as a double major in the Dyson School, all students are advised to meet with their advisor in their current college to discuss the desire to double major as well as to map out an alternative plan, such as minoring in business. Dyson enrolls transfer students in the fall semester only. The application for fall transfer will be available in early March. The deadline to apply is May 1, at 11:59pm ET. Applicants can expect to receive their admissions decision by late June.

Eligibility requirements

Here’s a closer look at the eligibility requirements for a double major in applied economics and management at Dyson.

GPA and student status

Cornell GPA of at least 3.0
- GPA of 3.3 or higher is more competitive
Full-time student (12-credit minimum)
In good standing in their current CALS major
Preference is given to current first-year applicants

Economics experience

Successful completion* of ECON 1110 – Introductory Microeconomics (or equivalent AP/IB credit accepted by Cornell)
ECON 1120 – Introductory Macroeconomics is not required but strongly recommended

*Accepted applicants typically have a B+ or better.

Math experience

Successful completion* of at least one of the following calculus courses (or equivalent AP/IB credit accepted by Cornell):

MATH 1110 – Calculus I
MATH 1120 – Calculus II
MATH 1910 – Calculus for Engineers
MATH 1920 – Multivariable Calculus for Engineers
MATH 2130 – Calculus III
MATH 2220 – Multivariable Calculus

*Accepted applicants typically have a B+ or better.

Statistics experience

Successful completion* of at least one of the following statistics courses (or a score of 5 in AP Statistics):

AEM 2100 – Introductory Statistics
PAM 2100 – Introduction to Statistics
PAM 2101 – Statistics for Policy Analysis and Management Majors
ILRST 2100 – Introductory Statistics (cross-listed as STSCI 2100)
MATH 1710 – Statistical Theory and Application in the Real World
ENGRD 2700 – Basic Engineering Probability and Statistics
BTRY 3010 – Biological Statistics I
STSCI 2150 – Introductory Statistics for Biology
SOC 3010 – Statistics for Sociological Research
HADM 2010 – Hospitality Quantitative Analysis

CALS students transferring into the AEM double major will typically have taken their required statistics course within their current college or major.

Writing experience

Successful completion of one First Year Writing Seminar (FWS)

Additional courses (recommended, not required) that will prepare you to double major in AEM include:

AEM 2300 – International Trade and Finance (cross-listed as ECON 2300)
ECON 1120 – Introductory Macroeconomics (not needed if you have AP credit)
ECON 3130 – Statistics and Probability
ECON 3140 – Econometrics
ILRST 3110 – Probability Models and Inference for the Social Sciences

Please note that courses in management, marketing, accounting, and finance that are offered as part of the university Minor in Business do not fulfill AEM major requirements and therefore are not recommended for students intending to double major in AEM.

Note: In order to qualify for admission into the AEM major, students must compete microeconomics, calculus, statistics, and one First Year Writing Seminar (FWS) course at Cornell before they matriculate into Dyson. Students may use AP or IB credits to replace one of those course requirements for their Dyson application, but that AP or IB credit will not count toward graduation requirements.

Eligibility Criteria

When isn’t the AEM double major a fit?

There are a few exceptions to who may declare a double major in applied economics and management at Dyson.

CALS students who fit one or more of the following conditions are ineligible to double major in AEM:

Transfer students
Current juniors and seniors
Global and Public Health Sciences (GPHS) majors

If you do not qualify for the AEM double major, consider adding a business minor, particularly the Dyson Business Minor for Life Sciences.
