Johnson’s Local Small-Business Advisors

Big Red Microenterprise (BRM) is an educational experience based out of the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise at the S.C. Johnson College of Business that spurs microenterprise development by assisting self-employed individuals reach their business goals. Launched in January of 2009, BRM connects promising, local, sustainably-inclined or underserved entrepreneurs with Cornell Johnson MBA students. BRM supports the Center’s commitment to supporting the change-makers in Tompkins County and surrounding areas who are building stronger, more vibrant communities and promoting inclusive wealth creation and local economic development.

What We Do

BRM provides free coaching services to promising entrepreneurs, small businesses and local non-profits. Whether you are developing a business plan, navigating challenges or seeking strategic connections, our student advisors are here to help you grow, solve business problems and support your growth. Typical topics include:

  • branding & marketing strategies
  • operational improvements
  • pricing analysis
  • strategic planning
  • e-commerce and digital marketing
  • financial modeling & projections
  • growth strategy or pivoting

Working with BRM: Clients

Self-employed residents, small business owners and non-profits in or near Tompkins County are eligible to apply!

Preference is given to applicants that meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Operates a sustainability-focused business
  • Identifies as a member of an underserved or underrepresented population
  • Earns less than your county’s median income
  • Local non-profit whose mission aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Business or organization has been operational for at least six months
  • Limited access to the formal financial system due to poor credit history, lack of credit history, or limited collateral

Working with BRM: Students

Big Red Microenterprise is open to first- and second-year MBA students.

There will be information sessions and an application period during the fall semester.

Students will receive 0.5 credits in the 2nd half of Fall semester for participating in 4-5 training sessions.

Students will work with their client during the Spring semester and receive 1 credit.

Students will participate in a poster session and submit a write up analyzing their work.
