Curriculum

During the first year, you will complete foundational coursework in applied economics and management while also taking electives across the college of business to broaden your academic perspective. In the first year, you will also select one of the following specialization areas to focus your studies and deepen your expertise.

Specialization area options include:

  • Food and Agricultural Economics (FAE)
  • Environmental, Energy, and Resource Economics (EERE)
  • International and Development Economics (IDE)
  • Management (MGMT)

In the second year of the program, you will transition to thesis work, including developing research questions, conducting research, and completing your thesis.

Applications open in September, with a deadline of December 15th for a start in the subsequent fall term. Late applications will not be accepted.

Application checklist

B.S. or B.A. from an accredited university

Submit all undergraduate transcript(s) along with any graduate school transcripts. Upload transcripts into the online application form. Students who are subsequently admitted and accept the offer of admission will be required to submit an official paper transcript prior to matriculation.

GRE examination scores

GRE scores are required for application submission, though there is no minimum score requirement. Scores are valid for five years, and the highest score will be considered if multiple exams were taken.

Academic statement of purpose

Submission of an academic statement of purpose is required, detailing your academic interest and how this program relates to them and your professional goals.

Personal statement

Describe how your personal background and experiences influenced your decision to pursue a graduate degree. Additionally, it should provide insights into your potential to contribute to Cornell University’s core value to provide a community of inclusion, belonging, and respect where scholars representing diverse backgrounds, perspectives, abilities, and experiences can learn and work productively and positively together.

Two letters of recommendation

Submission of two letters of recommendation is required. The letters should be from persons who can appraise the academic potential of the applicant.

Results of the TOEFL or IELTS (if applicable)

All international applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by submitting official TOEFL or IELTS. Field usually requires a minimum speaking TOEFL score of 24 and higher. Scores must be sent electronically (e-delivery) to the Cornell University Graduate Admissions, Caldwell Hall e-download account. E-delivery may also be referred to as an e-TRF by your test center.
